It is bordered by Shanxi on the east, Gansu on the south and on the north by Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Ningxia has a population of over five million people, many of these (33 percent) are Hui people. The climate is temperate and is characterized by long, harsh winters and summers that are short and hot.

Ningxia is a region that is incredibly rich culturally. It has a long, storied and resplendent history. From the period beginning 206 B.C., the region has been a primary hub for trading and transportation between eastern and western China. Today, remnants of the famous Great Wall of China can also still be found in Eastern Ningxia.

Ninxia is a very diverse region with lots of great customs, traditions, and things to do and see. In this article, we will highlight some of the best things to do and places to the visit in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

1. Shapotou: On the south tip of the Tenggar Desert, you will find a research clinic (the Desert Research Center), which was established nearly 40 years ago to study ways to prevent sand from running into China’s railroads. Sliding down the desert sand dunes also makes for a fun adventure. The feeling is akin to sky diving.

2. Lipupan Mountain: Known as the “Green Islet,” the Liupan Mountain is a very beautiful and scenic place to visit in southern part of Ningxia.

3. Yinchuan City: Yinchuan city is the region’s capital and is situated in remote northwestern China. Yinchuan city is 1000 years old and is perhaps most famous because of the Great Wall of China. Because it is so old, the city is full of great historic monuments, particularly in the older part of the city. Haibo Pagoda, Buddhist architercture, Chengtiansi Pagoda and the West Xia Imperial Tombs are some great places to visit as are the Helan Mountain Cliff paintings.

4. Sand Lake Scenic Resort: The Sand Lake Scenic Resort is a great place for tourists to visit. The resort has a lake, sand dunes, fishing and is a great place to do some bird watching.

Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is perhaps most famous because it was once the home of the Great Wall of China. This fact along, gives it tremendous cultural relevance. It is also a great place to visit during the summer as the weather during this time of the year is most conducive to tourism. Ningxia provides lots of things to do and the ability to see history up close and personal is really a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is able to visit the great country of China.
